And it should be noted that Alexander doesn't enjoy torturing people. Many times, Alexander displays his callous attitude towards the humans he tortures as if they were no different from the dogs he had experimented on previously, but it is made clear in the notes, diaries and cylinders that he is originally from an alien race far more advanced than ours, and you can't help but wonder about his sorrow at being trapped in an alien world, separated from his wife and anyone of his own kind, doomed to die a slow and lonely death unless he finds a way back home. Is he as dense as the flashbacks imply, or is it an act? Does he really regret torturing and killing all those people or is he just mad at Alexander for lying to him regarding his promise to keep him safe from the Shadow? Mega Time Squad is now playing in select theaters and on VOD. I just hope people can leave their worries at the door, come in and have a laugh." That's good advice. "The film is speckled with a fair few four-letter words, but if you chill out and listen to the rhythm, it's like relaxing profane music. " Mega Time Squad celebrates Kiwi-ness, particularly the way Kiwis speak," van Dammen told NZIFF. Van Dammen has produced and directed a number of music videos, and something of that sensibility comes through here, from the '80s synth-pop soundtrack to the quick cuts and loving homage to Hong Kong action movies. Annoyed that a rival Chinese-triad gang is horning in on his turf, Shelton orders John to steal a money drop at a nearby antiques store. Our hero, John (Anton Tennet), works as a flunky for local crime boss Shelton (Jonny Brugh, who played one of the vampires in What We Do in the Shadows) and is about to be evicted from the garage he's been living in. In other words, it's an odd, understated, delightful farce, with a touch of sweetness offsetting the zany antics and broad humor. Tone-wise, it's roughly in the same vein as Taika Waititi's delightful Hunt for the Wilderpeople and What We Do in the Shadows or the 2012 American Sundance favorite Safety Not Guaranteed. Written and directed by Tim van Dammen, the 90-minute film had screenings last year at the Fantasia International Film Festival and the New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF), earning praise for its sharp, slangy dialogue and clever twist on standard time-travel tropes. A favorite of the festival circuit, this quirky twist on the time travel genre is finally available in select theaters and on video on demand in the United States.
